Jeannie: A Texas Frontier Girl (Book One)

Every Young Person Will Love this Exciting Book!
Lisa, Editor of Lisa's Book Review Cafe gives Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl, Book One, a Five Cups recommendation and also gives an outstanding author award to Evelyn Horan and invites others to join Jeannie and her friends during her life in West Texas in the l880s. She has many adventures and at twelve years old, her adventures can only be fun! This was really a great story. I cna't wait for the other books to come out. I think every young person will be sure to love Jeannie and her exciting adventures!

A Thrilling, Inspiring and Entertaining Read!
It's always a thrill to find a book that teaches, inspires and entertains all at the same time. Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl is just such a book. Reading this book transports you back in time to an 1880s frontier Texas setting through the inquisitive eys of a sweet, yet spunky Jeannie. In fact, it's a joy to "travel back in time" with Ms. Horan's characters! The book teaches the heart of the land, that strong, courageous pioneer spirit that helped shape America. This book will inspire you.
Evelyn Horan cleverly weaves her animal characters into their own hopeful tales, reminiscent of the beloved CHARLOTTE'S WEB.
Jeannie grows in maturity and in her personal faith in God which is so naturally seamed into the story. FAith in God was central to survival for many pioneers. Those of you who value the foundational traditions of America will love the truthful recounting of small church and schoolhouse lore.

I recommend this book for all ages. Parents will find it a pleasure to read to their younger children. Children will love this book and find in its covers a picture of love of God, country, and family framed in a loyal and gentle heart that is Jeannie's. Thank you Evelyn Horan for raising the standard of contemporary children's books. It is encouraging to see a modern day author continue the tradition of quality American Children's literature while being respectful of America's foundational Christian heritage. I look forward to Book Two and know our readers will as well.

Good Introduction to Historical Fiction!
Sally Murphy Book Reviewer of Adolescent Literature.com writes, when Jeannie first lays eyes on the beautiful black colt with the white star, she resolves to ask her father about him. She is sure she can tame him. Despite some misgivings, Pa agrees that she can have him. Thus begins the adventures of Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl, Book One. Twelve-year-old Jeannie shares many adventures with her new horse, whom she names Diamond, together with her faithful dog, Ole Blue, and her friend Helga, recently arrived from Germany. Jeannie confronts many dangers, part of living in West Texas in the l880s. When Diamond is stolen by Indians she must try to get him back, when threatened by a rattlesnake she must act quickly, and when she and Helga are almost caught in a tornado, she relies on her instincts to survive. This is the first book in a series of four tracking the adventures of Jeannie and her friends. Along with her many adventures, Jeannie is shown learning about life, love, and friendship, as well as strengthening her faith in God. The book gives a great insight into the life of the ranches on the Texas frontier in the late l9th century and will appeal especially to children sharing the times at school. Evelyn Horan is a teacher-counselor who has previously had numberous children's articles published in both secular and religious publications. Her wholesome writing would make a good introduction to historical fiction for young people.

A Line in the Sand: The Alamo Diary of Lucinda Lawrence, Gonzales, Texas, 1836 (Dear America)
Published in School & Library Binding by Scholastic (September, 1998)
Author: Sherry Garland

A great new Dear America book.
For her thirteenth birthday in 1835, Lucinda Lawrence's grandmother sends her a diary. Lucinda lives in Gonzales, Texas, when the American settlers were fighting to break free of Mexico, and she writes of many historical events, including the Alamo (where she loses a brother and an uncle), Goliad (where another of her uncles is killed), the Battle of San Jacinto, and the "Runaway Scrape," when the women and children of Texas barely escaped a step ahead of the Mexicans. Lucinda's diary is another wonderful Dear America book and I highly reccomend it.

A Line in the Sand, The Alamo Diary of Lucinda Lawence
My book, A Line in the Sand,The Alamo Diary of Lucinda Lawrence by Sherry Garland, is about a family that lives in Gonzales, Texas. The year of 1836. In San Anotonio there was a war that was about to start against the Mexicans. The Mexicans wanted Texas as theirs, other then having Texas as a free country.

Gonzales, Texas took a part in this war by sending their men to help fight against the Mexicans. They also were sending them food, bullets, and other goods that they would need to help them. Lucinda's brother and uncle went and fought against the Mexicans. During the battle against Santa Anna they die in action.

I think this was a great book. I would recommend this book to people who like a page turner and also likes to read books in a form of a journal or diary.

One of the best out of the whole Dear America series!
This is a really great book! I have recomended this book over & over & every one has loved it. I was just as upset, sad & as happy as she was @ all the right parts. This book is described really nicely. Read this, you'll like it, trust me!

Texas Destiny
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday Books (August, 1997)
Author: Lorraine Heath
Average review score:

Texas Destiny is a western version of Beauty & the Beast
The ravages of war tore apart the Leigh family, leaving Houston to live in the shadows, Dallas determined to have the best of all worlds including an empire, a wife, and an heir, and Austin who has no one to teach him love still exists. Amelia Carson lost all she held dear on a plantation that was in the way of the North; her only hope was a new future, her dreams were all gone. After breaking his leg Dallas sends Houston for his mail order bride. When Amelia Carson meets Houston she sees behind the torn face of a young boy into the heart of a beautiful man and she begins to believe dreams can come true but maybe too late, she is to marry his brother. The only love Houston Leigh knew existed since the war was that for his horse and the land. One look and Houston knew this beautiful woman could make the shadows go away, but he would never be able to give her his love There is no way you won't cry yours eyes out. I ride the bus to work every morning and I doubt if I will ever live down my crying and the gentlemen next to me thinking I surely lost a loved one. Ms. Heath has written a beautiful love story that not only tears your heart out but makes you believe in dreams.

Emotional and Touching Romance
How do I begin to describe such a beautiful story as TEXAS DESTINY? I could say it's set in post civil war Texas and is a mail order bride story, and part road romance and it could even be classified as a beauty and the beast tale but that doesn't even begin to touch on the emotional impact of Ms. Heath's newest work. This book touched me from beginning to end and is a book I'll always treasure. It's also the first of a trilogy - Yayyy!

Houston Leigh's brother Dallas has broken his leg so he's unable make the trip to pick up his mail order bride-to-be Amelia Carson. Houston has hideous facial scarring on one side of his handsome face and has lived his adult life hiding in shadows and covering his face with his hat. He has shunned human contact and feels most content in the company of his horses. Because of his scars and less than charming personality Dallas feels it's safe to assume his new bride won't fall for his brother during the three week trek.

Amelia is disappointed that she has to spend three weeks with her fiance's grouchy brother but tries to make the best out of her situation by trying to engage him in conversation by bugging him with irritating questions he doesn't want to answer. Eventually she gets under his skin and although it scares him he slowly opens up to her and they form a hesitant friendship which gets stronger as the days pass and they reveal bits of themselves to each other. Both of their lives have been shattered by the war and they've both dealt with it differently. He has given up on his dreams and withdrawn from the world while she is the eternal optimist finding something to be grateful for in every situation, she looks at her future with joy waiting to make her dreams a reality. She even manages to find a dream for Houston to believe in but they despair because she is promised to his brother . . .

The hurting and lovable characters make this story so memorable. I've found in the majority of romances I've read that one character usually really comes alive while another is not as well drawn. Well, I loved the heroine as much as the hero in TEXAS DESTINY. She's a woman who has seen the worst life can do to a person but hasn't been beaten down by it. Her optimism and willingness to embrace life is refreshing _and_ believable. And Houston . . . he's my favorite kind of hero. He's a wounded soul, he's got lots of integrity, he's serious, heroic, and best of all is sensitive. He's been dealt a raw deal by life and really needs a hug. This book is so realistic: there is no witty banter during their first few days together but there are lots of awkward attempts at conversation and long silences, and Houston's trying to desperately come up with words to charm Amelia but always coming up empty was so endearing.

I know many readers avoid the Civil War period but this book is less about the war and more about the healing of two people who as children had to bear witness to human nature's darkest side. But don't think it's all darkness and pain though! The book is filled with so many tender moments my eyes were stinging and it has a quiet wit that made me smile. The longing, the soft caresses, the hot kisses, the despair and the impossible love these two share made my heart ache but somehow they always managed to maintain their senses of humor. And the sense of place is done so well I felt like I was living the story. I stayed up late reading with a flashlight until 12am last night because I just didn't want to put this book down. This is _very_ rare for me - since I get up at 5am! I'm a zombie today but boy was it ever worth it

Wonderful
This is the first book in a series of 3. I have read all of them and thoroughly enjoyed them. Lorraine Heath makes you fall in love with her characters. She does not create a typical hero. In Texas Destiny you can not help falling in love with Houston and Dallas. This book gives the foundation to the next two books. You can not help wanting to know what happens to everyone. I felt so good reading this. I guarantee you will not be disappointed if you purchase this book.

In the Midnight Rain

Author: Ruth Wind

Beautiful story
Biographer Ellie Connor sees an opportunity to provide personal comfort to herself while researching the life of blues singer Mabel Beauvais. Ellie heads to Pine Bend, Texas where Mabel simply vanished while on the verge of superstardom. Over three decades ago, her mother became pregnant in the town, but never revealed the identity of Ellie's father.

Ellie stays at the home of attractive widower Blue Reynard, an individual she met via E-mail. As Ellie makes inquiries into the life and disappearance of Mabel, she hesitates about searching for her own roots even though she knows she needs closure. Even more stirring to her already over-boiling emotions, Ellie and Blue begin to fall in love. She is not sure she can deal with her feelings for him and her search for her father while he has never recovered from the death of his first wife.

IN THE MIDNIGHT RAIN is a poignant contemporary romance that shows how talented an author Ruth Wind is. The gut-wrenching tale will evoke strong emotions from the audience, who will want Ellie to find what she truly seeks. The charcaters are complex as they demonstrate how complicated modern day relationships have become even between two people. In her mainstream debut, Ms. Wind blows away much of the competition with a remarkable rousing drama that touches the inner soul of the reader.

LOVE: Lost, Found and Held on to...Don't Miss this one!
Ellie and Blue have been internet writting buddies for a year. Ellie is a biographer, interested in Mabel Beauvais, a blues singer of the fifties/sixties who walked away from her fame. Blue, Dr. Reynard with a PhD in Botany, offers the cottage on his property as a center for Ellie's investigation into Mabel's life. Blue lives in Mabel's home town which offers a treasure trove of information as to who this wonderful blues singer was and what might have happened to her. Ellie (real name Velvet Sunset) is on a parallel quest, to find her unknown father. Yet this summer will give her the chance to discover more about herself than about Mabel or the missing man who fathered her. For Blue, meeting Ellie breaks down walls of protection errected around his life; One filled with loss of his parents, early and his wife five years ago. Driven by the relationship building between these finely carved characters, Ruth Wind has fashioned a deep, pulsating love story. With the background of sultery southern nights, a forest of orchids, the warmth of great blues music and emerging passion between two great romance characters, this book is a must read for everyone. If you love character driven story lines, self discovery, and deep devotion this is your kind of story. Great tale of love, lost, found and held on to. DON'T MISS THIS ONE!

In the Midnight Rain: outstanding contemorary romance.
The story of Blue and Ellie is simply irresistible. I enjoyed this book tremendously. It is slow, sensual, and poignant. It's a smooth blend of pure romance and fascinating mystery (What happened to Mabel? Who is Ellie's father?).

The relationship that develops between Blue and Ellie unfolds first as friendship over the Internet, and then as strong attraction when they meet face to face. The setting is irresistible: a charming, small southern town, hot southern nights, blues music, orchids, and alcohol. The cast of secondary characters is varied and wonderful. Ruth Wind has written a keeper!

Love Without End by Glenda Greene
My ex-husband recently died from Lou Gehrig's disease. He left this book as his legacy. I would not have made it through his death without the wonderful words from this book. It gave me the explanation as to why such a wonderful person could suffer from such a horrible disease. It gave me the inspiration to go on without the love of my life in it to share with. I open the book all the time just to hear the words that Jesus left us to help us through the trying times in life. It is the most wonderful and inspirational book I have ever read. I recommend this book to everyone in time of need. Please, tell all your friends about the book, it will lift their spirits and give them a reason to live life to it's fullest and to "live life in love." I know that was Jesus' message to me and this book has changed my life.

If the entire world could "absorb" this book's knowledge!
After reading so much for easily over three decades, I just can't believe that I can honestly say Glenda Green's Jesus Speaks is totally, totally enlightening! Intelligent knowledge blended with spiritual wisdom. Unfortunately, as with "the" Bible, I find absorption is best when a few pages are read at a time - so that the information rises to a higher level. Buy it, read it and read it again! In time, as you incorporate more love into your life without judgement, you will be a changed person. I send you eternal love and light. :)

It was a Life Changing Experience reading this book!
I have read the book and found it to be deeply moving.

I haveread it over and over again. This book has changed my life. Thankyou for this generous gift to me collectively and singly.

It has helped me connect in a great way to my soul. Glenda you are doing a wonderful work. I love the art and the book. You have touched so many lives to make a strong impact.

Your book and tapes have enabled me to find truths in a way I can understand and take it in.

Chapter two was my favorite. This book has been a good renewal base of my spirituality, along with my church participation.

I have found this information to be of the highest spiritual quality.

Some very interesting scientific information is described in this book, about the wonderful universe that God has created.

I particularly loved your description of the functions of the heart. This is a very important as a daily devotion for me, in my faith.

I am so anxious to get the work book when it is published.

Again, thank you so much Glenda Green!

Angel

"Angel" is of Johanna Lindsey's best .
I collect Mrs. Lindsey's books I'm only missing three titles. I read Angel for the first time a little over two years ago, I have read it numerous times since. It has become one of my favorites. It is always nice to see a connection with the books you read. Johanna Lindsey has the talent to re-introduce characters without making it seem like they are still stuck in the first book you read with the same characters. Cassie and Angel are a unique pair and they trully deserve a book of their own. It is also nice to enter again the lives of Colt & Joselyn and Jesse & Chase it almost feels as if you are visiting old friends. There's something that can be said about a book that not only, introduces new charaters to interact with old familiar ones, but also can make you feel as if you are living the story

A roaring good time
"Angel" is the first JL book I've ever read and i loved it so much i have since bought everyone of her books and they are all amazing and unique and simply wonderful. This book is on my top five books of all time and it should be on everyone's. Angel is so adorable. He is so nice despite what happened to him and so strong yet vulnerable. Cassie was a perfect match for him. An excellent read...but that's not surprising coming from Ms. Lindsey.

Absolutely wonderful!!!!
I am an absolute lover of all of JL's books, except one which is not worth a mention, but, this book is one of my all time favorites!!! I loved Cassie and Angel and the way that they ended up getting married is hilarious!!!! This book is one to read and reread over and over again. Angel- well, one word describes him: hubba hubba. Ok, so it is kinda two words!!!! Read this book! You will love it and read it a gazillion times!!!

Heaven, Texas
Published in Audio Cassette by Books on Tape (January, 1995)
Author: Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Average review score:

Phillips' texan romance is truly heaven sent
When I first picked up this book, I thought, uh-uh. No way can I get into a book where the hero's name is Bobby Tom. He sounded too much like some red-neck cowboy and not at all like the darkly handsome heroes of other romances. However, it took me about 2 whole seconds to fall head over heels in love with both Bobby Tom and this book. Phillips perfectly masters the romance genre combining great characterization with an interesting plot and lots of sweet humour. Yet at the same time she spices up her story with steamy sex scenes and gut-wrenchingly emotional confrontations between her 2 lovers. The romance between former NFL quarterback and Miss Gracie Snow is a roller coaster ride of thrills and smiles from start to finish. In short, its absolutely wonderful and I highly reccommend it.

Bobby Tom and Gracie will make you laugh out loud
After an injury that ends his football career, ex-jock Bobby Tom Denton signs on to become an actor. When he doesn't show up on the day of shooting prim and proper Gracie Snow is sent to retreive him.

Gracie Snow is ready to change her life. At the age of 30, she has finally left the retirement home that her parents ran and is ready for a change. She needs to get Bobby Tom to Texas on time, or else.

Once in Texas, gorgeous Bobby Tom tells everybody that mousy. frumpy Gracie Snow is his fiance in order to keep the matchmaking mamas away. Gracie plays along. Bobby Tom gets her a make-over, making Gracie actually look cute. The two spend time together and Gracie falls madly in love with Bobby Tom.

Susan Elizabeth Phillips has once again written a wonderful, witty and memorable romance. Gracie and Bobby Tom will remain in your hearts and you will laugh out loud at their outrageous romance. I can guarantee you'll fall in love with Bobby Tom and never look at a plain woman the same again.

I love it, I love it, I love it!!!!
I was randomly preveiwing books online one night when i came across the book Heaven, Texas. I double clicked on it only because I thought it was a cute title and had a nice cover. But I am sooo glad that I did buy it in the bookstore a few days later because this is hands down one of the best romance books I've ever read. Susan Elizabeth Phillips creates amazing characters that are extraordinary and fun-loving! You can relate to the characters and there are times when they make you giggle out loud.
This was my favorite book of hers, and i'm sure everyone else who has read it loves it. I've read this book at least 15 times since I've had (which is about 3-4 months).Bobby Tom and Gracie are great and this book just really makes you believe in true love (at least while your reading it)and that's saying something because I don't believe in love ( but that's another story for another time).
I also encourage you(anyone who actually reads this) to read her other books as well ( although Hot Shot and Just Imagine definitly weren't that great if you ask me, but that's just because they're not as light as the Chicago Stars series). I especially recommend It Had to be You and the other Chicago Stars books.

Spellbound from the very beginning
Mirror Image is the best book by Sandra Brown that I have ever read. I have read just about every one of her books, and this is the one that I simply could not put down and have highly recommended to all my friends. From the very beginning, you are spellbound. The total mystery of what is going on and the heroine's total inability to do anything about her situation urge you to keep reading. I could hardly put the book down until I reached the end and found out who, what, and when. If you like a story that keeps you guessing until the very end, this is the one you must read.

One of my very favorites!!!
This was the best Sandra Brown book I have ever read--and I've read all her books. I have read, and re-read this book at least a dozen times and I think it just gets better every time. You really feel Avery's anguish and fustration--not to mention the love she has for Tate. I wish you could give a book more than five stars--I would probably give it twenty and still not think thats enough! I agree--this would make a GREAT movie!!!

perfect Sandra Brown
I began reading Sandra Brown's more current books. When I exhausted those I bit my tongue and started reading her "older" writings, listed as romance novels. I am not a romance fan. But I got so hooked on Sandra Brown that I HAD to read more. I am never disappointed. Mirror Image has to be among the top few I've read. It has it all. Intrigue, mystery, great plot, and yes even romance. Keep them coming Sandra!

I loved the book and didn't want it to end!
SUNSET EMBRACE was another fine work of Sandra Brown, she always wets the appetite of the avid romance reader. Her characters are wonderful. I had Lydia, Ross, even Victoria and the families on the wagon train all pictured so well in my mind. You just live the part with Sandra's characters. What a talent to paint them so clearly and for you to empathize with them so thoroughly. This story roped you in from the beginning and clearly, I did not want it to end. I'm happy to hear that there is a sequel for me to enjoy as well. SUNSET EMBRACE is a definite keeper! Thanks Sandra!

great love story
This was the first sandra brown book I read - I picked it out randomly at the library based on the jacket. I couldn't put it down and went in search of every Sandra Brown book I could find. So far I have read every one I could get my hands on, although this one remains a sentimental favorite. Ms. Brown takes you to another time and really makes you feel as though you're there on that wagon train and you can see Lydia's unique beauty and Ross's tender side underneath all his rough exterior. I highly recommend it - you won't be disappointed - from the first page you'll be caught up in this great love story!

If you're a historical romance fan, this is a keeper!
This book is one of the first historical romance novels that I had ever read, and I hope that other readers will enjoy it as well as I did. This is the story is written so well, that I was able to picture what was going on, and almost hear the sounds of the wagon wheels. The reader is able to get involved in the struggles of the passengers of the wagon train. This book is very well written, and if you're a historical romance fan, this is the book for you. I also reccommend the sequal ANOTHER DAWN. I am hoping that Sandra will continue on with her stories of Lydia, Jake, Banner, and the whole crew! Keep up the good work Sandra!

Life Is So Good
Published in Hardcover by Random House (February, 2000)
Authors: George Dawson and Richard Glaubman
Average review score:

Warm, but only scratches the surface
I enjoyed reading about the life of George Dawson, a man whose life has spanned three centuries. However, the mere fact that he has lived so long does not necessarily a feature book make. Aside from Mr. Dawson's rail travels and working on the Mississippi, Mr. Dawson had not done much else until he took up reading at 98. He can't comment much on events of the 20th century because he couldn't read, and what he could remember was scant. The reader is presented with a view of a genuinely kind man whose outlook on life is basically positive and warm. Yet, I often could not distinguish if I was listening to Mr. Dawson, or his "co-author", Richard Glaubman. It would have been far more interesting to detail Mr. Dawson's years since he began to read. The book speaks of the large numbers of letters written to Mr. Dawson, congratulating him on his beginning his literacy venture so late in life. Why not write more about his classroom experience and how that must have transformed him recently?... or the interaction with those who now wish him well? Perhaps a second book should be in order because that is where the REAL interest in Mr. Dawson lies.

An inspiring, true story
This book is about the life of George Dawson, a remarkable 101-year-old man who is the grandson of slaves. Born in 1898, he tells of what life was like in Texas before integration. He turned away racial hatred by his gentle manner and kept his dignity during the most trying circumstances. He did manual labor from the time he was 4 until he was 90, and at age 98 he began to look for new challenges and so decided to go to Adult Education classes and learn to read. When he was growing up, he was always working, and as the oldest son he was depended upon to contribute financially to his family. His younger brothers and sisters went to school, but he never had a chance until someone knocked on his door and offered him the chance to learn to read. His quiet dignity shines through the pages as his story is told to co-author, Richard Glaubman. Glaubman is an elementary school teacher from Washington who became fascinated with a newspaper article he read about Dawson in a Seattle paper. The two became good friends over the course of the writing of this book and it is told in a narrative style of two friends chatting about the past. Some of the most interesting stories involve Dawson's early years and the times in his 20's when he traveled around the country just to satisfy his wanderlust. This is a wonderful book and in the course of reading it I felt as if I'd gotten to know a very special person

A Book For Students and Teachers of All ages
George Dawson is a remarkable man. He was the son of a slave and grew up in Texas. At the age of four he began working the family farm. At twelve he was sent out as a hired hand to help earn money for his family. He left home at twenty-one and traveled the country by rail. He worked hard all his life and encountered many hardships but there is no bitterness in this book as there is in so many memoirs today. This book is like a mini lesson in American history from a black respective. I loved this book because it showed so much perserverance and determination. George Dawson never was able to go to school as a child because he always had to work but at the age of 98 he learned to read! At 103 he was working on his G.E.D. He died in June of 2001. I read part of his story to my first grade class this year and they were fascinated. It shows how it is never too late to learn. This is the best book I have read all year.
